"Long Way" was the title song for my first album in 1978 on Train on the Island Records, a cooperative label from one the longest- living music cooperatives of the era; June Apple; which was based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I actually wrote the song five years earlier in Scottsbluff, Nebraska when I was working for VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and was missing my Minnesota friends. Lately this song has taken on a new meaning for me with the death of Bill Sarjeant of Saskatchewan, who was a great friend of folk music in Canada and around the world.
To Bill a safe journey, and to the fearlessly talented singers of Saskatoon I dedicate this song. You know what being a friend is all about!
Verse:
C F-G C G If you're leaving me, have you got the fare? C F-G C G If you're leaving me, have you a coat to wear? F E F If you're leaving me, are your shoes in good repair? C G C 'Cause it's a long, long, long, long, way, to another friend
Additional verses:
If you're leaving me, are you rested for the road?
If you're leaving me, are your stories told?
If you're leaving me, do you bear a lighter load?
'Cause it's a long, long, long, long, way, to another friend
If you're leaving me, is it early in the day?
If you're leaving me, can you find your way?
If you're leaving me, can I ask you once more to stay?
'Cause it's a long, long, long, long, way, to another friend
